A Sewing Kit

The cool thing about writing a research paper on your favorite hobby - you run into a lot of useful resources. I found this PDF just today that gives you the basics of a sewing kit and a lot of useful advice and tips that will save you time, money, and a lot of unnecessary cussing.

There are also a few places you can look that give you advice on a simplified version of a sewing kit you can make in minutes. Or here on how to make the cute modge podge travel case pictured above. I might have to go thrifting and create myself one of these vintage masterpieces.

Question: What is your favorite sewing tool - the one thing you can't live without?

If I had to choose just one thing... that's hard. I think I'd have to limit myself to my top 5:

1. rotary cutter and mat - totally didn't appreciate it for the longest time.
2. seam ripper - unfortunately it gets more time with me then anything else.
3. magnetic pin cushion - my new LOVE! It saves so much time and I don't end up with tons of pins in my carpet.
4. sewing/knitting gauge - it's a tiny metal ruler with a sliding plastic marker in the center. It's so helpful when measuring small areas.
5. large plastic ruler - 5 x 24, it big and makes using my rotary and mat work so well together.

I like that you asked us for ONE thing and then couldn't decide on just one thing and so you gave yourself 5 things to list. I'm taking that as an invitation since I can't choose just one must-have sewing tool.
1. My clear quilting ruler. It has a 45 degree angle at one end which is great for bias tape and I love that it is see through.
2. My funky chalk roller do-dad. I don't know what the name of it is but I use it on every project to help me mark lines and dots.
3. Sadly, my seam ripper as well. We have a pretty pathetic love/hate relationship.
4. My hot pink tape measure. When I hang that around my neck, I know I am in the zone and ready to sew.
5. Of course, Hansel. My Husquvarna Viking sewing machine. I would be lost without him.

Top 5 for me too! :) (And I LOVE that sewing kit! What a cute idea.)

1. My iron
2. My lucky chopstick to turn ties and things right side out.
3. Seam ripper
4. Thread holder. This is the best thing I've bought. Now I don't have threads everywhere.
5. My Brothers (sewing machine and serger) - I feel like they are my friends. I know, they are inanimate, but I love them. They are good to me. :)
